About Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal
Saint Joseph's Oratory began as a small wooden chapel built in 1904 by Brother Andre Bessette, a humble doorkeeper of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Known for his devotion to Saint Joseph and the many healings attributed to his prayers, he inspired the construction of a huge basilica whose copper dome is among the largest in the world. It is the largest church in Canada and stands on the north slope of Mount Royal.
Brother Andre was canonized in 2010, and his heart is kept in a reliquary at the shrine. Pilgrims climb the central stairway, some on their knees, and leave candles in the votive chapel lined with crutches left by those who felt healed. The basilica, crypt church and gardens look out over Montreal. More than two million visitors arrive every year, and many say they feel the quiet trust in Saint Joseph that Brother Andre taught.
