About Kyiv Pechersk Lavra
In 1051 the monk Anthony settled in a cave on the hills above the Dnipro, and his disciple Theodosius organized a community that became the mother of Eastern Slavic monasticism. Over centuries the monks dug a labyrinth of underground corridors where the incorrupt remains of saints lie in glass covered coffins. Above ground grew golden domed churches, a bell tower and printing houses.
The Lavra is divided into the Upper Lavra, a museum reserve with the Dormition Cathedral rebuilt after its wartime destruction, and the Lower Lavra with the Near and Far Caves. Pilgrims descend with candles through the narrow passages to venerate the saints. Travel to Ukraine is currently affected by the war, so check official advice before planning.
