About Jasna Góra Monastery, Częstochowa
Pauline monks from Hungary founded Jasna Góra, the Bright Mountain, in 1382, and soon received an icon of the Virgin and Child believed by tradition to have been painted by St. Luke. The Black Madonna, with two scars on her cheek from a 15th century attack, became the spiritual heart of Poland. The successful defense of the monastery against the Swedes in 1655 strengthened her role as Queen of Poland.
The icon is unveiled several times a day to a fanfare of trumpets in a packed chapel. Every August walking pilgrimages arrive from across Poland after days on the road, singing and praying. The monastery treasury holds centuries of votive gifts, including offerings from Lech Wałęsa and Pope John Paul II.
