About San Thome Basilica, Chennai
Christian tradition holds that Thomas the Apostle reached India in 52 CE and was martyred near Chennai in 72 CE. San Thome Basilica stands over what is venerated as his tomb, making it one of only a few churches in the world built over the grave of an apostle. The present neo Gothic church with its tall white spire was completed in 1896 on the site of earlier Portuguese churches.
A museum and an underground chapel give access to the tomb area. Pilgrims also visit St Thomas Mount near the airport, a hilltop shrine marking where the apostle is said to have been killed, and Little Mount, with a cave where he prayed. The basilica faces the sea near Marina Beach.
