About Voroneț Monastery, Painted Churches of Bukovina
Stephen the Great built Voroneț in only three months in 1488 after a victory over the Ottomans. Decades later, Metropolitan Grigore Roșca had its outer walls covered in frescoes, a hallmark of the Moldavian churches meant to teach the Bible to villagers who could not read. The intense blue background, made from a pigment whose recipe is still debated, earned the church the name Sistine Chapel of the East.
The west wall holds a vast Last Judgment, with rivers of fire, the weighing of souls and people of many nations awaiting their fate. Nuns now live in the monastery and keep the grounds and garden. Other painted churches nearby include Humor, Moldovița and Sucevița, all part of the same UNESCO listing.
