About Washington National Cathedral
Washington National Cathedral is an Episcopal cathedral that also serves as a house of prayer for national occasions. Construction began in 1907 and ended 83 years later, using medieval methods of stone on stone Gothic building. State funerals and interfaith services held here have given it a role in the nation's spiritual life. It is the second largest cathedral in the United States and the sixth largest in the world, a vast limestone church in the shape of a cross.
Inside, light pours through more than two hundred stained glass windows, including the Space Window with a moon rock embedded in it. Outside, carvers added whimsical gargoyles, among them a famous Darth Vader high on the northwest tower. The cathedral welcomes people of all faiths, offers daily services, and maintains peaceful gardens on the hilltop. Its bells and organ concerts fill the hilltop with music on many evenings throughout the year.
